DANCE: Moving forward towards the past & Back towards the future

Ira Chelidze wrote in this magazine an article about the Sukhisvili-Juniors. When I read it I thought on my friend Birgit Kuch. Dance is interesting. According to Merton it is both latent and manifest functions in dance. Earlier dancing could be performed to secure the God's good will, but the latent function was to unite people in a tradition that kept them together. As for the modern dancing the manifest function is to display and please yourself (as the God), and the latent function is more or less to show that you keep up with whatever "tradition" MTV force on you (although they don't innovate much in those circles), or get on TV. I don't know. Maybe your friend can enlighten me on that :-)
