CALL: 2 PhD Positions, Caucasus Studies Program, FSU-Jena (69/2013) (uni-jena.de/kaukasiologie/cascade.pdf)

(uni-jena.de/kaukasiologie/cascade.pdf) The Caucasus Studies Program at the Friedrich-Schiller-University of Jena solicits applications for two three-year PhD positions to be funded by the European Commission (subject to the final agreement of the Commission). The project is due to start on the 1 of October or November 2013 and run for three years, which is also the period of funding for the two positions.

The PhD students will be expected to participate in the activities of the international research project entitled /CASCADE -- Exploring the Security-Democracy Nexus in the Caucasus /(coordinated by the Maison des Sciences de l`Homme in Paris; principle investigator in Jena: Florian Mühlfried). The research focus of the first PhD is female labour migration from Georgia to Greece (or a comparable topic); the second PhD student will investigate issues of regional development and land privatisation in the South Caucasus.

The candidates are expected to spend one year in the field, and other two years in residence at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena, Germany. Their doctoral dissertations will be supervised by Florian Mühlfried and a second supervisor from a relevant discipline, preferably anthropology. Both PhD students should reside in Jena during their time in Germany, or spend at least three working days per week in Jena.

Activities which are part of the workload covered by the stipend include one year of fieldwork, writing, taking part in project meetings, disseminating activities, and the coordination of research activities. For the latter task they will be assisted by a student assistant. During their residence in Jena, the PhD students are also expected on occasion to teach a seminar in the Caucasus Studies Program and/or lead a student excursion to the Caucasus.

Fieldwork experience in the North or South Caucasus, an MA thesis on a Caucasus-related topic, and/or graduate training in sociocultural anthropology or a related discipline will enhance the chances of the applicant. The candidates should be fluent in English, Russian and/or another language prevalent in the Caucasus. Command of German language is preferable, but not a requirement.

The positions will be based on the "Tarifvertrag für den öffentlichen Dienst der Länder" (TV-L, 1/2 position). Given equal qualification, applications from disabled persons will be considered preferentially. The travel expenses for fieldwork will also be covered.

Interested candidates should submit the following materials:

Cover letter with name, address and current position of the applicant, including a description of the candidate's MA topic, research interests, accomplishments, and plans.

A brief project outline (not more than three pages)

A recently published article on a relevant topic

Curriculum vitae

Names, positions, institutional affiliations and contact information for two references

Electronic submission of all materials as PDF files is strongly encouraged and should be sent to PD Dr. Mühlfried at this address:
